Somewhere to sit, all year round.
This one started as lawn. The brief was an outdoor room that would still get used once the evenings turned cold, which in practice means a fire pit with proper seating built around it rather than chairs dragged across the grass.
Building it
The terrace is laid over a compacted base with edge restraint right around the perimeter, so the border does not creep outward over the winters. The seat wall is capped in a contrasting stone, and the same dark stone is run as a border through the field to give the space a defined shape.
Detail
The circular fire pit sits on its own inlaid ring of pavers. Details like that are cut on site, which is slower than laying a plain rectangle and the reason the patio looks designed rather than delivered.
